1. Everest Region

The Everest region is not only home to the world’s highest mountain, but it also boasts Tibetan Buddhist monasteries in its foothills. Here are a few spiritual landmarks you may encounter on your Nepal trek journey that are worth exploring: In the Everest region, the total trekking distance is around 135 to 140 km, again subject to specific trekking routes. 

i) Tengboche Monastery

Tengboche Monastery is one of the oldest and largest monasteries in eastern Nepal. Located in the Khumjung village of the Everest region, this gompa is also known by its alternative names, like Thyangboche Monastery or Dawa Choling Gompa.

It is elevated at an altitude of 3,867 meters (12,687 feet), and the distance from Namche Bazar to reach the monastery is around 11 km, or around 5 to 6 hours of trekking. If you continue the trek to Everest Base Camp from the monastery, it takes around 25 km. Trekkers at Everest Base Camp love sharing their experiences and understanding the place's culture.

ii) Pangboche Monastery

Pangboche Monastery is located in the Solukhumbu district at an altitude of approximately 3,985 meters (13,074 feet) in Pangboche village. It is located in the rustic setting of the Imja River Valley, around 17.3 km, just before reaching the Everest Base camp trek. Even in the high-altitude challenge, devotees manage to summon their virtue of enlightenment in gompas as such. Also, if you want to explore Ama Dablam base camp at 4,570 m, on your spiritual sanctuary in Everest, it takes around 4.8 km. 

iii) Other monasteries in Everest Trek

The Everest region is home to almost a dozen spiritual sanctuaries and gompas. Thame, Namche, Phakding, Kyarok, Khumjung, Mende, and Pema Namding Monastery are a few to name. Among these Buddhist monasteries located in the Everest Region of Nepal, over 1000 monks still reside here.

2. Manaslu region

The Manaslu region is home to the world’s eighth-highest mountain, Mt. Manaslu (8,163 m), with its most famous monasteries and diverse landscapes. Let’s learn about the core values that these monasteries hold and how they can shape your Nepal trek experience.

i) Rachen Gompa

Rachen Gompa is one of the oldest monasteries in the Nubri Valley, with a rich history dating back to its inception in 1905 AD. Located at an altitude of 3,240 meters, this is a famous nunnery on the trekking route of the Tsum Valley trek. The Rachen nunnery  When you hike from Bhajyo , it takes around 7 hours to reach the nunnery. You can relax in this beautiful spot  witnessing view of Langju Himal. 

ii) Serang Gumpa

The Tsum Valley trek is often one of the most loved in the Manaslu region. But when you combine the Rupina La Pass trek with the ultimate trekking experience, you get to explore more of the monastery retreats.

Add a side trip to the Sarphug trek of Tsum Valley (for 3 to 4 days) and also get to explore Serang Gumba in Manaslu. To make it more fun, make it a camping trek. From Bhim Phedi, the Serang Gumba arrives after you take the upward trail from the quaint village. The monastery trek will take you closer to exploring the daily chores and spiritual practices of monks. Besides, it also offers you panoramic views of Shringi Himal (7161m).

iii) Shyala Monastery (Pungyen Gompa)

Nepal trekking experience can help you explore the untamed potential and stop at the surrounding mountains and landscapes. Shyala Village is eye candy for travel enthusiasts. Following the trekking routes of Soti Khola, Machha Khola, Jagat, Namrung, and Lho village, you reach here to find a welcoming respite in the rich cultural heritage of the Manaslu region.

The most renowned monastery in the area is the Pungyen Gompa, followed by others like Ribung Gompa, Gumba Lungdung, Kal Tal, Gumba Lungdang, and Phungen Gompa. One needs to acquire a Manaslu restricted area permit and TIMS card to trek in Manaslu. 

iv) Other Monasteries in Manaslu, Nepal Trek

There are several other gompas on the trek to Tsum Valley. Starting from Milarepa Piren Phu Cave on the way (3361 m) on the Shiar Khola trail, you begin to have insights into painted Buddhist murals. As you gradually ascend, you can trek to Mu Gumba (3510m), the largest monastery in the Manaslu region, founded in 1895 AD. After a trek of 4 hours, you will be led to Dhephyudonma Gompa (4060 m).

The gumba takes you to the house of religious books in Buddhism. You can find images of Guru Padmasambhava and Tara. Buddhism's history, philosophy, native culture, and the houses of nuns in the Ngak-pa sect of the Tsum Valley trek are beyond the extraordinary.

3. The Annapurna region

Nepal is a sacred site with profound Buddhism in practice, as it is the birthplace of Gautam Buddha. Along the Nepal Trek experience in the Annapurna region, you get to have glimpses of sacred sites and shrines of Buddhism.

i) Jhong Monastery

Jhong, also known as Jong Monastery, is one of the oldest monasteries on the Annapurna Circuit trek. It is home to ancient Buddhist sculptures, paintings, and a collection of statues of Buddhist deities. As claimed by reports, it was constructed back in the 18th century, rebuilt quite a few times, and is one of the primitive pilgrimage sites for Buddhism.

ii) Chhairo Monastery

Chhairo Monastery, also known as Tashi Shagagh Jyochen Chhoyokhor Monastery, is located in the Upper Mustang. It was founded somewhere around the 16th century. According to the research obtained, it was one of the first monasteries of the Nyingma School of Tibetan Buddhism.

iii) Other Monasteries in Annapurna Nepal trek

Annapurna region is also home to Chandanbari Gompa, situated in Marpha Village. Monastic communities have been inhabiting the Annapurna region for a while now. Monasteries nestled amidst the Annapurna sanctuary emit echoes of the rhythmic chanting of monks and the preaching of religious sermons.
